Tucked away in the picture perfect Norfolk village of Cley-Next-The-Sea, lies one of the best Delis in the country. Picnic Fayre is packed with fascinating goodies, wonderful locally sourced products; charcuterie, cheeses, fruit and vegetables as well as a well stocked wine cellar. I could and did spend far too long
Their home made food is to die for but the one thing I can never leave without, in fact I would make the pilgrimage to Norfolk simply to buy their home made lavender bread. A fluffy, soft foccacia dripping in sweet olive oil flavoured with lavender and rock salt. I managed to resist their beautiful looking pies much to the husband's chagrin.
Every nook and cranny of this old building is crammed full of products ready to jump into your basket and head home with you. Award winning Picnic Fayre has been going since 1984, it's eclectic atmosphere is as welcoming as it's super friendly staff which came as a relief after our horrendous experience at a Cookies Crabshop in Salthouse, where we literally refused a lunch because we tried to order a sandwich for Matilda. Their inflexibility and rudeness will stay with me. Such a shame as we thoroughly enjoyed our last visit but will not be returning, or indeed recommending it.
Anyway back to the lovely Picnic Fayre which I would have no hesitation in recommending, hell it even merits a special trip! Perfect place to grab some picnic food or dinner after a long day on the beach, or if you just fancy a Norfolk ice cream sold from a small window looking out onto the street. However if your cupboards need stocking up with all manner of spices or conserves Picnic Fayre should be high up on your destination list...
