Violet Cakes, Dalston

I cannot go through Dalston without stopping for a coffee and cake at Violet Cakes. Tucked away down Wilton Way, Violet always boasts a queue waiting patiently for the freshest of cakes and lunches cooked on the premises. In fact, we watched as they made oat cookies last Friday, I love that you can see them all at work whilst the smell of baking envelopes the cafe.

On our way back from Essex on Friday, feeling rather weary and drained from my Father in Law's funeral. Nothing could cheer us up more than a big strong Latte and salted caramel cupcake.

Violet was started by Californian Claire Ptak who began as a Pastry Cook then Chef for Chez Panise in Berkeley. She then moved to London with her husband taking up a stall at Broadway Market in 2005, where she still sells today. Then came the delight that is her little cafe in Wilton Way.

My particular favourite is her Cinnamon buns, they are to die for. Sadly there were none to be had last Friday so I had to settle for a Salted Caramel Cupcake, hardly settling I'll admit, for it was perfect. Matilda's sweet tooth was satisfied too as she demolished her Violet Cupcake in no time at all. Do pay Violet a visit, you won't be disappointed.
