Stuffing our faces in Portugal...

I was going to give this post a more fancy title but quite honestly, this is exactly what we did during our week in Portugal. Lunches and dinners at my parents house are four course affairs lasting several hours, portions are big and with such fresh good quality ingredients, one just cannot resist the temptation.

Portuguese cuisine has it's roots firmly planted in earthy peasant food, with a strong leaning towards fish and seafood. Combining meat and seafood is the norm here and with fish as plentiful as it is, this comes as no surprise at all. Portugal is also known as the Bacalhau nation, there is a different bacalhau recipe for each day of the year, yes a whopping 365 dishes to be tried.

The Portuguese have an incredibly sweet tooth, cakes, biscuits and puddings are firmly ensconced in the country's culinary traditions. Cafes are the place to go for the freshest cakes baked on a daily basis, for me the intense smell of coffee mixed with the intoxicating sweet pastries is enough to send me to nirvana.

Here is a small selection of what we ate and saw on our trip.

Juicy prawns in a white wine, garlic sauce

Gorgeous homemade Ice creams by Santini not cheap but worth every euro.

The most delicious Custard tart ever! My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Crunchy salad yum.

One of my favourite dishes ever, sauteed Squid and chips!

Octopus fritters with tomato rice and a spicy dip.

These were divine, lemony custard enveloped in a light and fluffy sponge otherwise known as Trouxas da Malveira which translate as Little rags of Malveira.

Our local cafe has an extraordinary selection of celebration cakes.
