Vietnamese restaurant: Song Que, Kingsland Road

The husband and I are HUGE fans of Vietnamese food and there is nowhere better in London than the good ole East End for a Vietnamese feast.

We became hooked on this clean, fresh food whilst on our honeymoon. Whilst others like to spend their first weeks of married life lying on a deserted beach, the husband and I wanted to trek round Cambodia and Vietnam. We fell in love with the cuisine, especially after we took our day's cookery class kindly bought for us as a wedding present by an old university friend.

The husband with his creation. He got no help at all!! Mmm...

We found out just how intricate their cuisine can be whilst taking full advantage of the incredibly fresh food available,, including some ingredients we've never had the pleasure of trying here. For example the delicious morning glory, yes it bought a smile to our face too. A wonderful salty spinach like vegetable that is simply stir fried. Wonderful stuff. Fish and sea food occupies first place in this oriental cooking with fish that is caught at 4am and on your plate by lunchtime, I've never had the pleasure of eating anything so fresh.

Anyway back to Sunday's feast at the critically acclaimed Song Que. If you're wanting Hoxton chic then this is not the place for you. It's all lurid colours, papers table cloths and lots of plastic. But the food, oh the food is exceptional. This is authentic Vietnamese food that transports you to far off lands. Sunday lunch was buzzing, a big restaurant practically every table was filled. Waiters ran around precariously carrying plates of hot food but despite this they were extremely attentive.

My Seafood Pho was perfect. Delicately aromatic with plenty of seafood, fresh herbs, fiery red chilli and crunchy bean sprouts. I thoroughly enjoyed wading through this generous wholesome soup until there wasn't a drop left. The husband loved his Pork salad and Matilda had a lot of fun eating up her yummy chicken 'doodles'. For pudding we devoured a fresh spring roll, which brought back many memories of delicious lunches on our travels. We got quite addicted to these little delicate beauties filled with the crispiest of salad, herbs and prawns all wrapped up in rice paper.

Matilda had a good go with the chopsticks until she gave up and got her hands stuck in.

So if you're ever in this neck of the woods, do give Song Que a go. It's ridiculously cheap too, for the three of us including drinks we paid under £35. Real value for money and so filling we couldn't eat a thing that evening.
