It was with a very heavy heart that we left Cornwall yesterday afternoon. The more we return the more we wish we could just gather up our belongings and move there lock, stock and two smoking barrels! One day...
Ravaged by the Winter storms Cornwall has not been deterred from being ready and open with a big smile for the Summer Season, which began with Easter. Local communities have been coming together to help with repair and rebuild of this precious coastline. The evidence of Mother Nature's ferocity is still evident; Porthcurno Beach where the Hidden Hut where I've written about here, open for business but still without their steps to the beach have been promised a new broadwalk and stairs yet to be built. Porthleven, one of my favourite little fishing villages was devastated, they lost eight fishing boats but to go there now you wouldn't think what they had to go through to raise the funds to repair their village. The only noticeable difference were the absence of the fishing boats that perished. Shops, cafes, restaurants and the pubs were thriving all getting ready for this weekend's food festival.
We tried to do our bit to support the recovery, only buying from the independent shops, stalls and farmer's markets not stepping foot in any of the big chains. The weather was not so favourable at the beginning of the week which lead us to take some amazing road trips along the coast and inland. A dramatic, grandiose landscape that draws the beholder in to it's mystical beauty where time has stood still for centuries. If you didn't know better you would be forgiven for thinking you'd been transported back a few hundred years. The wild coast line stretches for miles without any indication of human life, making it the perfect place to escape the burden of modern life. Mother Nature is very much the ruler here in Cornwall, it can feed yet destroy all at the same time.
Our time was spent enjoying deliciously fresh produce, playing on the beach gathering driftwood and pebbles, walking along the coastal paths then retreating to our cosy, warm Dingley cottage in the evenings to read and watch films. If you are considering holidaying at home this Summer, I can't recommend Cornwall highly enough with plenty of activities to entertain the whole family.
A week is never enough, so Cornwall we'll be back soon to have our fix of your rugged beauty and warm Cornish welcome.
